That seems like a lifetime ago! Bessie is mine and I am hers.

This morning a woman I didn’t know knocked on my door. That’s unusual here as the place is quite remote. She had found a dog wandering on the side of the highway. Now that is not unusual –people come up to the Smokies for vacations and when they leave, dump the dog. Or locals buy a puppy “with papers” (you know, you mustn’t have pets spayed/neutered if they “have papers”), pup becomes dog, nobody (surprise!) will buy dog, dog gets dumped. There are always dogs needing homes and after many years of having about six dogs at a time, I steeled myself to start saying no. I can’t afford them – to feed them, let alone Frontline, heartworm preventative, and vet bills. I have my dog, Danny, and my cat, Katie, and we get on wonderfully. No housebreaking headaches, no destruction in my beloved garden....
I had managed to say no for five years. My heart wasn’t just steel, it was reinforced with titanium! (Not sure if that works, but you get my point.) Adorable puppies, sweet and smart mixes (my favorite), and one heartwrenchingly beautiful Australian shepherd, all got a no. Then the knock on the door. A golden retriever.
ahhhhhh so beautiful.....
ReplyDeleteEnigma4ever, thank you! I know many people say that to be well-mannered, but I can't accept a compliment for something I didn't do. ;) I'm not sure which of my characters you found lovely --I think I'll assume it was all three! It tickles me when someone see my babes as I do!
ReplyDeleteBess really is a looker, though. She has outrageously long, thick gold eyelashes --I catch myself just staring at her with wonder. Best of all, unlike many people, the beauty of her spirit surpasses her appearance.
I'm too tired to be trying to write anything --maybe this'll make sense to somebody. LOL
